Production Principles – Photographics

Going into this rotation I had absolutely no experience with photography of any kind, so this was all new to me. After the tutor went through the fundamentals, I went around UAL and other areas around me looking for interesting shapes as we discussed in the lesson. Fortunately, the LCC building interior has a wealth of intriguing shapes and architecture, so I already had quite a few ideas of what sort of piece I wanted to make. In addition, I also took pictures of other interesting locations and shapes I saw around.

I struggled to get into the mindset of a photographics artist, looking at the shapes of something rather than seeing a door, a window, etc- simply seeing squares or other shapes. Even though it was a challenge I think I managed to get some good images and am excited to take them forward to editing!

I chose what I felt were the most interesting images to include in my work for this rotation. Ideally I’d want to experiment some more and create several images but with the limited time and my little experience I think I’m just going to go ahead and give it my best shot.

Final reflection:

Note: this is the same writing from my final production principles PDF.

I aimed to create an abstract piece with lots of architecture and building work elements, which went very well! I think the outcome is good, and shows I can work with a photographics mindset and focus on shapes rather than what the objects actually are. The piece came together effectively, but I feel I could have pushed my original concept even further and edited everything together in a way to enhance the shapes and values further. If I were to do this again, I would probably focus on the bottom left image of scaffolding as it is a busier and more intriguing set of objects than the one I focussed on.

Focussing on building work proved to be an effective staring concept that provided a lot of depth for me to explore and experiment with. One thing I’m proud of is the variety of interesting forms I used, in particular drawing the viewer’s eye around with the lines going in different directions.

My piece could definitely be more refined and effective. In particular, while I was working I could have sought more feedback throughout and done more experiments. However, my overall process worked well for me. If I were to do this again, I would look at more references and push my values further while working.

Overall, my experience was good and I felt I learned a huge deal about seeing the world with a photographics mindset- which can be applied to many different disciplines. However, I struggled with getting into this mindset for a good portion of the week and couldn’t wrap my head around what I was supposed to be seeing in the examples, although I eventually overcame this.
